Types of Poker Games

Any card game where the winner is determined according to poker hands ranking is called a poker game. All other rules are not obligatory which allows creating unlimited amount of poker games. Hundreds if not thousands poker games have their names and are popular among poker players. Why these and not other? Probably because they are more interesting and are not too complicated, so everyone can learn them.

Most poker games you can possibly encounter belong to one of four global categories or a mixture of them. These categories are stud poker, community poker, draw poker and guts poker. Some games can be played in the pure (deal and play) form, but these games are too primitive to mention.

Stud poker games are commonly represented by seven card stud or five card stud, with the first being a bit more complicated, and more popular. Stud poker games involve one basic stipulation: Some cards of the players are dealt face-up, so other players at the table can see and base their decisions on them. The game surely, becomes more interesting, because there is much more space for strategy and skills. On the other hand, too many face-up cards can eliminate the surprise factor and to make the game less exciting. The most extreme example of this is a game called Showdown, where ALL cards are dealt face-up. Unsurprisingly, this game is not very popular.

Community poker games involve a number of cards that are shared by all players at the table. This also is an interesting stipulation, because it involves a very specific strategy. A player must always remember that is the community cards can make his hand stronger, they can make stronger hands of other players as well. The most successful type of community poker games is Hold%u2019em two games of this type: Texas Hold%u2019em and Omaha Hold%u2019em probably are two most popular poker games in the world.

Draw poker games are more common in home games that at the professional level. The reason is that they are quite entertaining, but depend mostly on luck, unless stipulations of other poker types are involved. The main principle of draw poker games is the ability of players to discard some cards they do not want at some stage of the game and to receive new cards from the deck instead. The most popular draw poker game, which often is the first poker game a player learns, is five card draw.

Guts poker games involve a special declaration round, where players declare In or Out. Out is equal to folding, while players who declare In continue playing and those of them who loose at the show down must match the pot, so in the next round the pot often is multiplied. Two Card Guts and Three Card Guts games are quite popular among poker players, but the best thing about Guts poker format is that in can be applied to almost any poker game. So many games that are not called Guts, involve Guts principle.
